A Surprise from the Alsace

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

We love wines that defy expectations. Whether it’s a chardonnay that refreshes, a syrah of lighter weight, or a dry rosé from pinot noir; we enjoy exploring wine that tasters have wrongly pigeonholed, discovering once again the great variety available from any of the noble grapes.

No wine provides more such surprises than our dry Riesling from Alsace. Francis Muré, our very-small-batch winemaker whose property nestles in the Alsatian hills behind Rouffach, makes a pure Riesling that has wowed us (and sommeliers, and the Guide Hachette) for years.

One more time – it’s dry. Not sweet.

With only a whiff of this wine, you might think we were kidding. The nose bursts with pineapple, honeysuckle, and spring flowers: it smells sweet. But in the mouth this wine is lively, round and zipping with acidity. This Riesling has been among our most consistently delicious and best selling wines for over a decade.

Muré’s Riesling is the perfect food wine. Indian and Asian food is a favorite pairing of ours, but anything from shellfish to chicken to goat cheese will benefit from a glass of this by its side.
