New 2014 White Burgundy from a Master Winemaker.

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

Famous.  The “Hautes-Côtes” are an exciting part of Burgundy these days. Warming temperatures and the pursuit of value have driven winemakers into the “higher” (hautes) terroirs above the Côte d’Or. The wines from these hills may not have the staying power of wines from the terroir below them, but the best are early-maturing, fresh, and essentially Burgundian.
.
Our favorite white from this region comes from the famous Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard. Master of Wine Serena Sutcliffe credited Jean-Noël with “opening her eyes to white Burgundy,” and his daughter Caroline continues to produce wines at the same superlative level. Her Hautes-Côtes de Beaune is called “Sous Eguisons” and provides an opportunity to try wine from this storied source without breaking the bank.

Golden.  With Sous Eguisons, Caroline has combined her father’s rich winemaking tradition with new energy and passion, growing the grapes in an excellent location and vinifying them in the same way she makes the family’s Chassagne. Because she views Sous Eguisons as a wine to drink in the years soon after the harvest, she bottles it under screwcap instead of corks.
.
This is elegant, very pretty white Burgundy, showing much more refinement and subtlety than its classification suggests. White flowers and meyer lemon dominate the nose, along with notes of lime rind and chalk. The mouth shows a splash of the Chassagne richness with which the Gagnard name is synonymous, but sports an energetic freshness as well.
.
Gagnard’s Chassagne-Montrachets are some of the most expensive and sought-after white Burgundy in the world. Sous Eguisons requires neither the patience nor the investment — it’s an elegant, masterful white Burgundy for today.
