Burgundy

Jean-Louis and Didier Amiot make a wide range of red Burgundies at this long established Domaine in Morey St. Denis. Morey doesn’t get as much press as its better known neighbors — Gevrey-Chambertin to the North, and Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanee to the South and West — but it boasts 5 Grand Crus within its borders, as well as many excellent Premier Crus.

The Amiots have fine terroir at every level. Their village Morey always has plenty of structure and character, often needing a bit of time to come into its own.  Their trio of premier cru Morey St. Denis is as good as you can find: “Aux Charmes” with its ready charm and drinkability; “MIllandes” with its firm structure and aging potential, and “Ruchots” with its extra density and particularly round tannins.  At the Grand Cru level they have an excellent (and fair-sized) plot in Clos de la Roche as well as a very small one in Charmes-Chambertin.

Perhaps the best-kept secret of the domaine is its excellent premier cru Gevrey-Chambertin from “Aux Combottes.”  This vineyard on the Morey/Gevrey border is a premier cru entirely surrounded by Grand Crus. Many attribute its lesser rank more to politics than quality (it was largely owned by vignerons from Morey, not Gevrey), and almost everyone agrees that it is premier cru a notch above most others.  We love its velvety power and its ability to age.
