Despite the Spanish-sounding name, the Montez family has been making wine in Chavanay, on the right bank of the Rhône, since the mid-1700s. Today Stéphane Montez runs the enterprise, which produces a range of Northern Rhône wines at the Domaine du Monteillet. The Domaine sits at the top of a hill along the Rhône, and offers a commanding view of the river, both North and South, as it flows through the area.
The domaine makes excellent reds from Côte Rotie and St. Joseph, and also produces a very nice Syrah from outside the St. Joseph appellation. Perhaps the domaine’s very best wines are from Condrieu, the luxurious wine made from Viognier. The cuvée from the lieu dit “Les Grandes Chaillées” is always superbly balanced, fresher than much Condrieu and yet still unctuous. The Condrieu from “Chanson” is even more striking, with a depth and intensity that is truly impressive.
