Chateau Lagneaux à Pauillac 2011
This wine is from from the storied left-bank appellation of Pauillac (see Chateaux Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, Lynch-Bages). Built for the long haul, this wine is big and dense, meant to improve over many years in the cellar. It shows its new oak, but because Merlot dominates the wine it is not a bit harsh today.
With only half a hectare (a little over an acre) Chateau Lagneaux is a “garage” sized operation. But like the early garagiste wines, this one is of top quality. The nose is ripe and very deep, with a melange of ripe raspberry, plum, iodine, earth and minerals. The mouth is extremely dense and rich, with juicy plum fruit and a cool woodsiness. This should age marvelously.
